If you get MSDN, you can read my new article "ASP.NET ScriptManager Enables AJAX in your web apps". It received top billing in the September issue of MSDN.

If you have feedback, please post it here - I have another article planned soon.

Ben,

Just finished the MSDN article - really good stuff. Since I'm just getting into AJAX I had no idea you can treat the ScriptManager as a ClientScriptManager!

Here's my question. I want to update a button's properties based on the aprtial page update. The buttons are located outside of the UpdatePanel and based on the interaction I want to control the enabled and visible properties.

Is this possible with the ScriptManager?

Thanks

Hi Mike,

I'm fairly sure I understand what you're getting at, I would recommend having a look at the capabilities of the PageRequestManager (on the client), and tapping into its event-model. Have a look here: http://asp.net/AJAX/Documentation/Live/ClientReference/Sys.WebForms/PageRequestManagerClass/PageRequestManagerBeginRequestEvent.aspx.

I will probably start writing a bit on this topic here on this blog, so if there is anything the above link doesn't do to help you out please let me know.

Thanks,

Ben

Hey Ben,

The article in the link was great - I get how that could work. But, I'm not going to get this working for a couple of reasons. My javascript isn't real strong and since my site is wrapped in master pages there is a layer of complexity that is not covered in the article.

I'm still playing with it as time permits and I'll let you know if I get the best of it!

Thanks
Mike

Have a look at my latest blog entry here: http://www.ben-rush.net/blog/PermaLink.aspx?guid=0173a36c-e225-4380-86b5-1e92794bd173&dotnet=consultant. See if that helps.
